Ten tables, four cuts, no stake
Hardwood blocks, steel rails, a gantry full of lights, a green cut twice a week and nothing at all riding on a hand.
How the floor runs
Seats, chips and cuts
Eight tables stay open all evening — take a free chair, or ask at the bar and somebody will walk you over to one.
Two are reserved by phone for groups of four to six, and let go a quarter of an hour after the booked time if nobody arrives.
Every table has house decks, a score pad and a tray of chips. The tray is counted back into the consignment crate at close and the pad is thrown out.
- The games
- Euchre, five hundred, cribbage and social poker, all for points.
- Green cut
- Tuesday and Thursday 6pm, forty-five minutes, six seats, free.
- Breaks
- Ten minutes between cuts, fresh decks each time.
Practical
Four table questions
- How many to a table?
- Six under the gantry, four at the green cut.
- Can I turn up alone?
- Half the room does. Tell the bar and you will be seated inside ten minutes.
- Whose cards?
- House decks only, changed every fortnight, and they never leave the building.
- Is there a competition?
- The cane cutters ladder on Saturday — a name chalked on the consignment board, no entry fee and no prize money.
